SUSTAINABILITY OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION SYSTEM

“Sustainable agriculture should involve the successful management of resources for agriculture to satisfy changing human needs while maintaining or enhancing the quality of the environment and conserving natural resources” TAC/CGIAR (1989)

Livestock in integrated farming
Rainfed agriculture (crop production is in general the major source of income, while livestock provides draught power, manure and food as well as additional cash income)
Irrigated agriculture (availability of water outside the rainy season, which enables farmers to grow crops in more than one season)
Plantation agriculture (focuses on the production of any kind of industrial crops: rubber, oil palm, coconut and fruit trees)
